===Text and peritext===
According to Gérard Genette, the paratext is the vehicle by which a text becomes a book (Seuils,
Paris 1987, p. 7). The paratext forms a path or a treshold between the text considered as a series
of linguistic signs and the physical document, which is the book.
It seems clear from Genette’s definitions that he conceives text as an immaterial phenomenon,
which however, when written down or transmitted orally, assumes a certain graphic or phonetic
materiality, that may ‘induce paratextual effects’ (»le seul fait de la transcription – mais aussi
bien de la transmission orale – apporte à l’idéalité du texte une part de la matérialisation,
graphique ou phonique, qui peut induire [...] des effets paratextuels«, op. cit., p. 9). The paratext,
in other words, is considered to be the text’s way into the material world.
Certain peritexts – and for the sake of clarity, I shall confine myself to those paratexts which are
not epitexts – are indeed non-lingustic. That applies to the format of the book, the quality of its
paper, its layout and typography, which taken together may be subsumed under what Genette
calls ‘material’ and ‘iconic’ paratexts, respectively (op. cit., p. 12). Or, in another vocabulary,
which I have explained elsewhere, under ‘texture’ (qualities of the document) and ‘material text’.
But other peritexts are linguistic, e.g., the title, the preface, the cover text, the colophone and
dedications. They are in other words texts – and as such immaterial. If textual errors are detected
in them, they even split up in real texts (erroneous, concrete) and ideal texts (faultless).
In so far, the linguistic peritexts are related to »the text itself«, i.e., the series of linguistic signs in
the book, in an ambiguos way. On the one hand, they have the same ontological status as the text
of the book and may be split up into the same levels, but on the other hand they form a part of the
way of this book text into the world or a treshold for its encounter with the world.
This ambiguity calls for a closer examination. If time allows, I should also like to consider the
relation of peritexts to the concept of work.
The paper should be seen as a continuation of my attempts to clarify the concept of text relevant
to textual scholarship, initiated with the article »Text und Werk – zwei Begriffe auf dem
Prüfstand« (editio 2013) and continued in the article »Materialtext und Textur« (in print). The
paper will thus be an investigation into concepts and terminology. There will be no suggestions
on how to edit peritexts.
